Birds in Flight

Which is more real? Observation or memory?
Once I accepted that much of observation is really about memory, I felt emboldened to draw birds as they flew past me. Here are a few recent examples.

  1. Whitch is more real? Observation ore memory? What if there is no difference at all? I look out the window and see the jackdaws landing in the meadow, looking for food, and the birds make me so happy that I look for a long time, and then I say to myself you have to draw this. But the birds have already flown away again. And with the pencil in my hand, a few light strokes, right and wrong strokes, and suddenly I see the birds on the paper again. I think it was Ellsworth Kelly who said: sometimes I see something first and then I paint it, and sometimes I paint it first and then I see it. Best wishes, bon voyages, happiness and well-being!

    1. Brilliant Klaus! Thank you for the Ellsworth Kelly quotation. One of my favorite artists.
