Year End Reflections

It's the time of year that we think about the previous 364 days that have transpired. Or, maybe not. In this past year I hope that you found places and states of mind that transcend calendrical thinking. Happy New ?

Autumn Color

Fall is here. The few birds that visit the river are busy. And the trees are busy shedding their unneeded chlorophyll and solar collectors. New England is famous for its autumn colors and I respond and try to capture a tiny bit of it without resorting to cliché. These are direct drawings, plein air of course in pastel and ink mostly.

Red tailed hawks

02-22-21-hawk

I drew this hawk as it flew over in February, last winter. I drew a second sitting red tailed hawk in April. And then, nothing until late August. And in the last two weeks, there are two hawks that have been predictably perching nearby. I see them in the morning when I walk to the river. And I draw them.

The Chimney

There's an interesting chimney I see every day when walk down to the river. The chimney itself is pretty basic and made from bricks. It's what's on top that sustains my interest. The chimney sports an old metal cap to keep the rain and wind out. It's cone-shaped with a round vane on one end that keeps the open end out of the wind. So it's a cool shape.

A tribe of starlings seems to think so too. I regularly see them perching on top of the chimney cap, it's round vane and the bricks beneath. They always make a fine silhouette early in the morning.

Tangles

Making sense of tangles requires recognizing that they are indeed, tangled. And sometimes, a pattern emerges of which the tangle is a part.
